If you’re planning a water-supply scheme, you’ll hear two terms constantly: ESR and underground sump. They’re both water storage structures, but they play very different roles. Here’s the plain-language difference.
The short answer
- An underground sump stores water at ground level, below the ground — usually the first, large reservoir where water collects.
- An ESR (elevated storage reservoir) stores water high up on a staging so it can be distributed under gravity pressure.
In most schemes, water flows: source → sump (ground storage) → pumped up → ESR (overhead) → gravity distribution to taps.
What is an underground sump?
An underground sump is a below-ground RCC tank built to hold large volumes of water. Because it sits underground, it can be built to very large capacities without height limitations — we have executed a 95 lakh litre underground sump. Sumps demand watertight RCC construction and careful waterproofing.
What is an ESR?
An ESR is an overhead tank on RCC columns. Its height is the whole point: it creates the pressure that pushes water through the network without continuous pumping. ESR capacity is usually smaller than a sump because raising huge volumes to height is expensive — our executed projects include a 22 lakh litre ESR at 20-metre height.
Key differences at a glance
| Underground Sump | ESR (Overhead Tank) | |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Below ground | Elevated on staging |
| Main job | Bulk ground storage | Pressure distribution |
| Typical capacity | Very large | Moderate |
| Key challenge | Waterproofing | Staging strength & height |
Do you need both?
Usually, yes. A typical piped water scheme uses a sump for bulk storage and an ESR for pressurised distribution. The two work as a system — which is why it helps to work with a contractor experienced in both.
